About Medigas | Frequently Asked Questions

My doctor has just prescribed supplemental oxygen for me to use at home.  How do I get started?

If you have been prescribed supplemental home oxygen, contact us at (204) 786-4719 in Winnipeg or 1-800-665-5585 toll free, to arrange an appointment in our offices or in the comfort of your own home.  Medigas’s Licenced Medical Professionals will assess your oxygen requirements at rest and during your normal activities.  After reviewing the assessment, we will discuss the results with you and assist you in selecting the oxygen equipment that best suits your needs.

Our health care team will provide you and your family with information on the proper use of the oxygen equipment, including oxygen safety, in addition to this, we will continue to support you and monitor your progress.  We will provide you with an oximeter, a small device that fits on your fingertip that allows you to monitor your blood-oxygen saturation whenever required.  Blood-oxygen saturation is a measurement of how well your hemoglobin is able to carry oxygen in your blood.

How is the Medigas home oxygen program paid for?

If you have private insurance (eg., Blue Cross), check with your insurer to see if oxygen is covered with your specific plan.

Once you’ve started with oxygen from Medigas, you will be invoiced monthly.  Once you have paid the invoice, you may submit your receipt to your insurer or the Pharmacare Drug Program for reimbursement.  Just as with other prescription medications, you will be reimbursed after reaching your deductible.

We also provide oxygen to 3rd party payers such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Canadian Armed Forces and patients covered under Federal Non-Insured Health Branch.  Individuals who are enrolled in the Provincial Home Oxygen Program have the freedom to decide which oxygen company they would like to get their portable cylinders from, (portability is not covered under the Home Oxygen Program).  It is important that you check with your insurer to determine if oxygen is covered under your program.

I’m currently on supplemental home oxygen.  Will I be able to travel?

Yes, you can.

Depending on where you are going and for how long, as a Medigas oxygen client, we will make ensure that you have supplemental oxygen support at your destination.  Because Medigas has locations throughout North America, and associates in many international destinations, we are confident that your requirement for oxygen will not interfere with your travel plans and that your requirements will be properly met.  If you are already a Medigas oxygen client, in most cases there is no charge for making your oxygen travel plans.
